Synecdoche?

Following a bit of a dry spell, a couple of recent films have caught my fascination. The first is The Fall, directed by Tarsem Singh. When I sit down to watch a movie, this is what I wish for every single time, and even so, it exceeds expectations. By far. It was shot in more than 24 countries. It is so very beautiful. Words fail.

The second is Synecdoche, New York written and directed by our friend, Charlie Kaufman. Precision layering of ideas complex and slippery. The cast, led by Philip Seymour Hoffman, was perfect, which was probably necessary because the actors could not have possibly foreseen how this masterpiece would be laced together? So much of the story reverberates with me, which fuels its many turns in my mind, but the semantics, symbolism, plot and (dare I say) thesis are masterfully executed.

Synecdoche, by the way:

Definition

A synecdoche is a figure of speech in which the one of the following (or its reverse) is expressed:

  • A part stands for a whole
  • An individual stands for a class
  • A material stands for a thing
Examples (English)

  • Fifty head referring to 50 head of cattle
  • Cat referring to a lion

Speaking of synecdoche, I have always been a fan of serious make-believe. I resist the urge to don a cape in the morning with the best of 'em! Thus, I am a fan of photo shoots, especially of my beloved Erin and Jones, whose photos generally have fearless, acrobatic qualities to be envied. And I do. The following are by Paolo Focardi:

I saw this movie several months ago and can't seem to quit thinking about it. I watched it a second time with subtitles, but I'm sure I still missed a lot. Great movie, (I think?).
